Map and terrain

The map is in scale 1:40 000 and has contour intervals of 5 metres. Competition map has been generated from the Finnish ”Maastokartta” or ”MTJ”-material. To see the legend, click

Areas nearby the control points have been refined by organizers. A marked hiking trail ”Ilvesreitti” has been added to the map with its own symbol, and the high fences by highway 2.

The map size is 42 cm x 75 cm. Each team member will receive 1 map printed on waterproof material TYVEK and 1 map printed on normal paper. In addition, every them will get 1 paper-map for sketching a route plan. There will be plastic map covers available in Info.

In the map there will be south-north lines running across the map indicating the magnetic north.

Competitors shall not enter into yards or fields with dots or otherwise disturb local people. There are some restricted (for military or aviation) areas in the terrain, which are marked on the map by purple lines. Please remember that even crossing the lakes by swimming is forbidden by the rules of Rogaining.

The competition area consists most of fine pine wood forests, but there are also slow wetlands and old forest cuttings slow to cross. There are many small lakes in the competition area which will give some extra challenges for route planning. The tracks and minor roads give, instead, many intreresting possibilities to speed up a bit.

More information about map and terrain, please see the vetter statement.

Course, controls, punching

Teams may visit the controls in any order. There will be 74 controls in the terrain.

The controls are marked with an orange-white flag and a reflector.  There is a model control at start area. The SI (Sport Ident) timing system is used. There are no smartphone punching this year.

The controls are numbered from 30 to 110. The first digit indicates points of the control, e.g. control number 34 gives 3 points. Controls with three digits are worth 10 points, e.g. number 110 gives 10 points.

Control descriptions are included into map.

Refreshment controls are shown in the map. Competitors are not allowed to spoil, to use water excessively or use water for washing up at refreshment controls. The taps must not be left running.

Every team member has his/her own SI-card in 24 h. Instead, in 8 h and MTB 8 h, where will be only 1 SI-card for a team. In retki-rogaining sportident stick will be attached to your wrist. Card must be fastened in a way for it to be impossible to fall off or to be able to get off during the race.

SI-card must be cleared before start. If the card is not cleared it does not record any controls. A team must punch the controls they wish to gain points.  Please remember to with until you hear a beep and your visit has been registered. All team members must stay together, i.e. within 20 metres from each other during the whole race and all team members must punch within 90 seconds. The behaviour of the teams is monitored during the event.

In case of a lost SI-card it is possible to receive new one from the competition center but the controls on the lost card must be visited again to gain the points.

Competitors are not allowed to rest within 100 meters from control, unless the control is a refreshment control. Competitors are not allowed to spoil or damage controls, refreshment controls or any other structures built by organizer.
